Nathan turned 4 today.He has been playing and watching a movie,that is what he wanted to do for his birthday.We do not do school on birthdays,unless they want to(that has happened).He will have a party on Saturday also.

Bath Paints

I needed another present for Nathan (3) and a good friend of mine gave me the idea of bath paints. It is so good to have help sometimes! I also added a sponge ball.

The bath paints are super easy. I used baby soap, corn starch, and food coloring. I put it the soap in a bowl and added corn starch until it looked good, not too drippy. Then with small bowls I put the soap in and added my colors. Next I put them into small containers with lids. I had some that fruit had come in. I have a problem saving containers that look like I will use them someday for something. Sometimes it is so bad I have to recycle a bunch at once, but this time my obsession was handyJ.

The sponge ball was simple also. I used 4 sponges (thin ones from the dollar store), a plastic tie (dollar store) and scissors. I cut each sponge lengthwise into thirds, and made four rows of three. I picked up the stack and twisted it once, put the tie on and pulled it as tight as it would go.If you use thicker sponges you would only need three.

I hope Nathan likes his little bath kit. Bonus….It will get a boy in the tub!

Christmas for the Birds

Bird seed Wreath

4 cups bird seed feed
3/4 cup all purpose flour
1/2 cup water
3 T. corn syrup
1 package of plain gelatin
cooking spray
bundt pan

In a large bowl put warm water and gelatin mix together and let the gelatin dissolve.

Whisk in the corn syrup and flour to create a paste.

Add bird seed and stir well.

Spray the bundt pan well, and then scoop the seed into the pan evenly/

Tap down the seed well.

Put on a plate or paper towel and let dry 24-48 hours.

Tie a long piece of ribbon on the top.

Hang on a tree branch. After just a few days ours was mostly gone.

Our county set up a train show in one of the old outlet malls this year. It was fun to look at and the best part….free! The boys came home and went straight upstairs to get out their train sets to play.

The Bethlehem Project

Andrew, Sarah and Matthew were in this year's Christmas play at our church. They had been going to the church 2-3 times a week for practice. All three of them worked very hard. Andrew had lots of lines to learn (he seems to be a natural) and lots of actions to go along with the lines. Matthew worked hard on learning songs. Sarah worked on her few lines and songs, but also was an under study for another girl. Sarah memorized all the girl’s lines also! I heard the play went very well. I was home with Sarah that night. She ended up with a belly bug that day, we were both very sad. The good thing is Craig got lots of pictures and Pat got a video that I will see later.

We have been trying to get Matthew to recognize when he can read a word without taking the time to sound it out. We took all the books that he can read really well and has read many times and made word cards of every word in each book. As he read one of the word cards quickly he would get a cup to stack. Let me just say...I sure am glad that we had the warehouse bag of cups. He did a great job and had fun.

Today was such a beautiful day here today. I wish I had put my camera in the car, but I did not. We dropped Andrew off to work and took a nice walk to the beach, we played, walked, and collected sea glass. Most of all I just really enjoyed the blessings that God gave me. We laughed and enjoyed the sunshine and the beach. Even threw a few leaves around, what a pretty fall day!

When we got back home we did school and made some new chore charts.

Get this: the kids were excited about the chore charts and also did extra school. The sun sure did some good here!

Cub Scout Camp

Matthew went to his first year at Cub Scout day camp this year. It was 8 am to 4pm every day. He jumped out of bed each morning ready to go. But, he was worn out by day five,in a good way.

Andrew helped out by teaching scout skills to the Cub Scout boys. This is the 4th year that he has helped out at camp. The staff really counted on him to take care of a lot more things this year.

Professor Patrick, the not so bright, but very entertaining, paleontologist showed up a few times every day to give the kids a little information. The kids loved to see Andrew play that part, they were yelling and clapping when he came out dressed up.

I really don’t know who had more fun, Matthew or Andrew. What a wonderful week for them.

Sarah's gymnastics are done for the year.She did great this year,she has been asked o be on the team next year.We are still thinking about it.

Jessica's dance has ended also.She had a wonderful show!

It is so nice to watch my kids do what they love.It is hard getting them to all the places but they do enjoy most of what they do each year.

Right now it is time for us to take a summer break and have some fun.Some beach time,water parks,maybe a zoo and shhhh don't say anything, but I am going to sneak in some math!

It is Monday, my head spins on Mondays! I think of what I need to do for the whole week then I start to feel crazy with too much to do and not enough time to do it all. So this week I am really trying (I said trying) to focus on one day at a time. I really want to dive into what Easter is about this week with the kids. So we started today with some Bible readings, I would like to say that that is how I start every day, but that would not be true. One of my kidos needs help with math so some extra time will go to that child. I know the house needs some tlc so that will be next. My younger 3 need some books read to them, and so on and so on. My goal is this week to seek God's will for our week and spend some fun times with my family.

This past week was a very long week.We went to the doctors office two times,Ethan had rsv.It was a very hard week,watching your child struggle to breathe is very difficult.He has not wanted to eat or nurse or even take a bottle.We were happy with him taking one ounce at a time.I was up praying for him every night while he was up crying.He seems to be doing better now.Smiles are back and he is playing more and more.This just makes me realize that much more just how helpless we are and how much we need to lean on God.

Yesterday Sarah and Andrew made a robot out of a kit we bought.It was very cool. It has a broom and a paint brush on it.I wish it would sweep the whole floor but Sarah said she will work on a bigger one for that!

Nathan's skill has been learning to cut,yesterday he did lots of cutting,it is a hard job for a three year old!

We have just returned from a few days at Great Wolf Lodge,it was a nice little break from school.GWL has a home school special during the slow season,not everyone can take off from school in the middle of a school year as easily as home school families can.So we take advantage of the deal.It ends up costing us about a third of the regular price,one more plus for homeschooling!

We got a bowl and filled it with water. Then we got an apple, a quarter, a leaf, a cork, and a marble. Then we put each one in the bowl of water. Next we would write in the book whether it floated or if it sunk.

This past Sunday our church preformed their annual Christmas play. This year it was titled "Arrest These Merry Gentlemen" and was about a police officer in Bethlehem who, while pursuing a band of shepherds, finds Jesus, and discovers that he was the Savior they had been waiting for. It was a great play, and we all had fun doing it. We are all looking forward to doing it again next year!

Sarah is working on Exploring Creation with Zoology 3 Land Animals.We were talking about predators and prey blending with their environment.Prey don't want to be seen so they won't be eaten and predators don't want to be seen so they can sneak up on their prey.So we used 6 colors of M&M's and 3 colors of paper put them all in a basket and set the timer for 2 minutes.Sarah became a M&M predator.The M&M's that could hide in the same color paper had more of left than the ones that she could see easier.We talked about which M&M's would be most abundant in the habitat and which would become extinct.We had a lot of fun.

We had VBS this past week. Andrew played in the band and Jessica helped teach. Andrew and Jess were both in skits also. Matthew and Sarah went to classes. Overall it was a great week, hard to get there some days but good. The kids learned lots more about the bible and had a good time. Nathan, Ethan and I had some good time hanging out together. VBS is hard work in many ways but worth it for the kidos.

Andrew is helping at Cub Scout day camp this week. The theme is pirates. He is teaching scout skills all day to younger boys. He really has a gift of working with kids. This is going to be a long week for him. It is every day 8-4 and it is been over 100 degrees here with no cool break in sight. But he is a good sport and just keeps going. He is growing into a good young man before my eyes.

Craig took everyone but Matthew and the baby to see the blue angels the other day.Matthew does not deal well with loud noises, it is kind of funny since he is our loudest child!Nathan loved the show and is still running around pretending to be a blue angel!

Ethan is here!Born 5/19/10 at 6:10 pm.I had a really good delivery, everything went as we wanted it to.My doctor listened and was very helpful.Ethan is 6lbs.2oz. and 19 1/2 inches.I am getting used to getting up every 2-3 hours again.I do treasure the middle of the night feedings when all is still in the house.

DNA Extraction

In this experiment I was supposed to extract DNA from peas. First I blended up the split peas with salt water. I made salt water by mixing a quarter teaspoon of salt with one cup of water. I blended it until it had the consistency of pea soup (like I know what it looks like, that's nasty). i then strained the solution into a glass and added dish soap into it. The soap destroys the plasma membrane in the cells and lets the contents of the cell flow into the solution. After letting it for ten minutes I added meat tenderizer. The meat tenderizer has enzymes in it that destroys the proteins around the DNA so I could see them. As the final step I added as much rubbing alcohol as I had liquid (one cup) so that the DNA would float to the top. After a few minutes I could clearly see the DNA, they are the long, white, stringy strands. I left it for twenty-four hours and the DNA was more pronounced (bottom picture). Then I cleaned up my mess.

We decided to take a mini vacation to Great Wolf Lodge,they had a great homeschool special and we were needing a break!It was 84 in the water park and snowing outside one night.It was a great family place to go,very kid friendly.

The girls are learning about Ancient history this year.We were talking last week about the Minoans leaving Crete because of the volcano erupting on the island of Thera.So we made one.I will post more pictures later,it is looking great now!

This year I wanted to do more hands on projects this year,I have done more,but not as many as I would like.I would love a few more hours in each day.

The icicles on the house are huge and beautiful!

One of my projects, for history was to make a siege tower, on wheels. Because for history I was learning about Ashurbanipal. Ashurbanipal would order his soldiers to make the tower to knock down walls. So all of them would be able to go in and fight.

With this experiment I was looking at an Anacharis leaf under a microscope. Anacharis is a water weed that is outlawed in some states because of its tendency to take over an ecosystem. While I was doing the experiment everyone lined up to look at the plant,because apparently my science is cooler than theirs.
